Re: Spaceport Singapore
it's great to know that our government bodies have started not only to think out of the box but to act on it as well.
10 years ago, they would think such stuff is a waste of money.
Now, we have IR and spaceport. Things do look interesting 5-10 years down the road.
Then they need to spend money to convert all the street lamps to only point downwards and not anywhere else.
And have laws against shooting spot lights into the sky for no reason. ...
Probably in zones outside the CBD and town areas would be good enough.
Just dreaming ...

well, with spaceport on the way, they might just listen to such request.jermng wrote:Then they need to spend money to convert all the street lamps to only point downwards and not anywhere else.

If someone can furnish me with some data like the kind of lights we use and what we can suggest they use (and benefits of it), I will write in a letter to them.
S&T used to have an article on this with even the streetlight model no.
You guys must be kidding, right?VinSnr wrote:well, with spaceport on the way, they might just listen to such request.jermng wrote:Then they need to spend money to convert all the street lamps to only point downwards and not anywhere else.

It is a space port, not an observatory. Think launching pads with lots of lights like:

Ever seen an airport with astro-friendly lights?

HAHAHA ..... actually the idea is, with the acceptance of astronomy as important, they can have all the lights they want at the SpacePort, but the awareness of the need for dark skies can be made known and steps can be taken to decrease light pollution (at other areas or even have designated areas where there are no street lights like LCK now just for astronomers- dreaming again).
However, when I think of it now, if SpacePort is gonna be in Changi and the IR at Marina, the stretch of East coast will hardly be useable for obs soon ... station yourself anywhere along east coast to the NSRCC site and even Changi Dark site, marina and changi will always be visible to the east and west and the skyglow is gonna kill!!
And if we consider the Sentosa IR leaking lights into the sky, the entire southern sky will be dead ..
Lim Chu Kang will be the ob site of the future ....
Go West!! (or is it north?? hee hee .. )
