8" SCT vs 15" Truss

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

I agree with Weixing. It takes the most expensive 8 inch SCT to be about the same price as the 15 inch Obsession. Well, the Obsession isn't cheap for a dob but neither is it too expensive for a premium dob; still much cheaper than Teleport/ Portaball/ Starmaster. For other dobs of less premium quality this statement of 15 inch dob same price as 8 inch SCT holds. Well perhaps David Kriege was comparing the premium 8 inch SCT with tonnes of what not and a premium 15 inch Obsession dob. haa.

Well, the only qualifying factor for the statement would be "yet costs ABOUT the same" .... they might be saying it doesn't cost alot more ... HAHA .. and "alot more" is subjective ...

I think 12.5" truss is the most reasonable way to go although 15" does sound good ....

BTW, I dun intend to get one so soon ... but who knows ... HAHA ... I said the same thing about the C8 ... HAHA

i believe when the statement is being put up, obession telescopes are still quite cheap. now prices of premium mirrors have gone up quite a bit and also the prices of obession have gone up quite alot, thus making the statement not true.

nevertheless, if one were to compare the price of a 14" sct rig to the 15" obession with all the dsc, the obession would still be a mighty bargain.

maybe the statement was made when takahashi still producing their 9" sct which costed US$4500 for the ota alone, so a tak 8" on a simple fork mount (never produced btw) should've costed around the same price as obs 15"

Jeremy, I saw the discovery split-tube at OPT and its not a pretty sight with its eighties-style sonotube and construction that looks like it comes from a sub-standard home workshop. I am not sure how durable sonotubes are after repeated soak-dry cycles. The lightbridge seems like a better bet IMO, and is 10kg lighter.

Haha, btw, if I write this on cloudynights, sure get blasted by some of the americans... they are so fearful of the China factor now, they will steer you to buy an american product, sonotube or not... heh heh :P

And yes Arief is right, the lightbridge is a good bit cheaper, espy if you buy from HK. :)

Hmm, the lightbridge is lighter than the discovery by about 20lbs. :)
