8" SCT vs 15" Truss

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Hi @all

to compare a Newton directly to a SC or MC doesn´t make sense. It is trueth, a 15" telescope will bring more light for watching deep sky objects and more fine structures on planetary surfaces. BUT, a SC or MC is another kind of scope, made for special usuality. So I see the advantage for a Newton there when you wish to use it to watch dificult objects with faint details. There will be a 15" or more Newton very good. But think please about, this big aperture has got also disavanages when you think about the thermic in the sky (seeing). Small apertures do have better features in this case.
So I would see the SC or MC as a special scope for watching planets and planetary nebulas in coherency with a small size scope. Therefor you don´t need a big mount (6" to 8" sizes) and the transportable point of view is very important. So I won´t wish to carry each night a 15" scope out to can make my observations.
For this I mean, the comparation of these both scopes are not right.

I think most ppl here agree that if you're serious in this hobby, you'll need at least two scopes; a 3-4" apo or 5-6" mak for grab and go and a 10" or above light buckets as your main scope. If you can only have one scope, an 8" sct or a 7" mewlon is a very good compromise. Aperture still rules, even for planetary, no matter how the sky condition is.

8-) agree
you´re right. As never you will find a telescope for show you all objects in this best conditon you wish to see it.

CC,
Thanks for your "warning" bout the looks and feel of the split tube ... :)

HoO, this thread is not so much a discussion about the scopes themselves but more about the article from obsession comparing the 8 and 15" ... and my curiousity about their claims ... :)

Arief, I agree with you. :) One scope is hardly enough, especially for gear freaks like me ... I wanna get a light bucket to supplement the scopes I currently have .... which is where the dillemma comes in now .... :)

The lightbridge idea seems very reasonable and other than the shipping problems which is definitely stopping me from purchasing one, reports and reviews so far have indicated it to be a pretty good scope. Considering the price, the money saved could be used to get a whole lot of EPs and accesories - even a DSC and still be cheaper than other premium or near premium scopes. :)
For my application, that seems reasonable - after all, everyone would love to drive a Jaguar, but the Mitsubishi Lancer I drive now (not mine, dad's) still brings me places and gives me obbing opportunities .... The same can be said of scopes right? :)

CC!!!!! Stop making me wanna buy stuff!!! HAHA ... :)
*kidding*

Seriously though, I wanna wait abit to be very sure it's resolved. It's gonna be SUPER TROUBLESOME to ship the whole thing back to the US just because they didn't pack it well. It isn't as big an issue for the guys staying in the US. :) For Meade, I suspect they don't ship direct to Spore so I have to use Vpost and incur a double charge if I ship it back and they have to ship it to me again ... :)

It's gonna take awhile for Meade to regain their shipping reputation ...

Next option would be to wait for May when my dad goes to the US and get him to pick it up for me. :) (Might not have to pay ... HAHAHA ... :) )

You may want to try our local Meade dealer first (Wee-kiong) or order from Grandeye, cheaper than US price and they will inspect the scope first before shipping it from HK to Singapore
