Hi,
Hmm... I think under normal operating condition, most of us won't be able to detect the different between ED and real flourite, so I think people will tend to get the ED scope at a lower price... so in order to be more competitive, scope manufacturer will start to use ED on their product instead of the more expensive real flourite. Also, as technology get better, those ED glass will only get better and may be one day better than real flourite.

Have a nice day.

btw arief,
this ZS II 80 ED is actually a new scope. William Optics is expected to announce the price for it soon. They have clarified this is not the co-TMB designed scope found in their fluorite doublet range. I think it was meant to be inserted between the "semi-apo" range and their flourite doublet/triplet series.
This will give them a price advantage to introduce a lower price scope but with closer to true APO performance.

Someone , like you asked about the FPL51 and 53 thingy too :
Question > How do you compare this design to the Semi APO and the Fluorite Doublet? I guess it is somewhere in the middle. ( because the
Abbe number for Ohara FPL-51 is lower than FPL-53; 81 vs 94 )

Answer from William Optics :
The new ED is MUCH better than an achromat or semi-apo, but is no
TMB designed lens nor fluorite.
We will post the graphs and spot diagrams next week, didn't have
time to upload them last Friday.
As usual, we try to offer the BEST bang for the buck of the whole
lot... The quality is all there, we have been playing with this for
many months, and it is an excellent performer. You will see soon!

btw arief, I doubt even tak (FS onwards) and tv (after Genesis) use CaF2 anymore.
check with robin...he may have the objectives although not necessarily the entire lens cell assembly. If your project is experimental, should suffice. Do call and let him know..heh heh
