Hey all,
Think I need some help with processing Jupiter as well. I'm using a simple setup - manfrotto camera tripod + mount so no tracking, eyepiece projection onto digicam (Nikon coolpix 4300).
Using Registax 3.0, I tried stacking about 36 photos of Jupiter.. but registax seems to have some problem tracking Jupiter as it moves across the FOV over the series of photos.. For this batch is still ok, but not very accurate thus the final pic actually seems fuzzier than the raw pic
For some other batches the alignment box simply doesn't follow Jupiter at all - just jumps around all over the FOV
Anyone knows how to deal with using Registax for non-tracking continuous shots?

1. Are the pics the actual size? If so I think they might be too small to get much detail even after processing.
2. Does the coolpix have a movie mode? If so, you can play with that.
3. When aligning individual still frames, I don't think the registax will be able to accurately register the images as is. You have 2 options: Manually align (click each frame), or crop each image so that jupiter is roughly centred.
4. Then, you might want to enlarge 2x to do the processing.

To Boothee, the wierd colours are probably just artifacts from the video file. What you can do is use a graphic software to select the oval that Jupiter is in, and then delete the rest. That's the only solution I can think of.

1. Actually the actual pic is even smaller than that.. I'm more of just trying to see if by stacking it can get any better than the raw pic, find out what's the best i can do with my current setup + camera..
2. The movie mode on cp4300 has resolution of 320 x 240 at 15 fps which is quite sad. So i don't think it's suitable >.<
3. I did try manually aligning but sometimes even when i centered on jupiter the alignment box didn't. So the outcome was about the same. Too lazy to crop all the pics heh.
Anyway thanks for the info!! Just hoping to pick up any other "tricks of the trade", but still seems like it's the prob of image quality hmm..
