Gum 56 Emission Nebula

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Gum 56 Emission Nebula

Post by rcj »

Hi all,
Here is another recent image of Gum 56 emission nebula (IC4628) located adjacent to NGC6231 open cluster in Scorpius. The amazing thing about this nebula is that it does not end in this frame, and probably stretches almost four frame areas wide or even more. Take note of the interesting "connecting dark structure" within the nebula. All data obtained from Singapore. Am planning to obtain more colour data from this object as the hydrogen alpha component is overwhelming, thus star colours are a bit weak for now.

Hydrogen Alpha component:

nice one remus...so that's what you were imaging yesterday! :-)
anyway, NGC 6231 is one of my favourite clusters but hadn't really noticed this nebula before....

i would not have known about this nebula if not for previous futile film attempts of it, just to capture the open cluster instead...then stumbled upon this faint object. it is really quite faint, even under dark skies, and is more of an imaging target...

Remus, you are amazing....for this kind of work, i can't even see what i am imaging and just hoping for something to turn up on the Image is frustrating, but also rewarding.

Now I agree that the B&W image looks better! Amazing work!

Hi,
I also prefer the black and white version... the colour version look a bit messy and scary... :P

Have a nice day.
