Short report: Io and Ganymede occultation behind Jupiter

Post by weixing »

Hi,
Anyone observe Io and Ganymede occultation behind Jupiter on Monday night (26 Jun 2006)??

Monday night was quite clear night, so I setup my scope at the Mosque field early at around 8pm hoping to have a quick testing imaging session... need to go back early to watch Italy vs Australia... hee hee :P :P :P

After I setup my scope, I realise that the light pollution at this time was too serious for DSO imaging... flood light of the swimming pool was too "powerful" and it'll only off at around 10pm. Then I saw Jupiter shining brightly above me. I point my scope at it and I saw 3 satellite very near jupiter (I just found out it were Io, Ganymede and Callisto). I decided to image Jupiter instead and start image Jupiter at 9:33:32pm. After the imaging session, it was around 10:20pm and decided to take a look at Jupiter before packing up and I saw only two Moons left (Ganymede and Callisto)... one (Io) is missing... hmm... and after a while I realised that Ganymede is going to have a transist infront of Jupiter or occultation behind Jupiter, so I sms Acc and Airconvent to tell them about it (wonder did Acc manage to see the occultation??).

Anyway, Ganymede start the occultation behind jupiter at around 10:50pm and end it at around 11pm... it had a "live" feeling as you see the Moon move closer and closer to the edge of Jupiter and "kiss" it, become a pimple on Jupiter surface and finally disappear behind Jupiter... :) In the end, I miss the first half of Italy vs Australia, but it was worth it :)

Today, as I was checking the name of Jupiter Moon that had the occultation on that night and realise that Io had an occultation earlier on. So I look through the "failure" images I took on Monday and found that I manage to capture the Moons just before the occulation... the image quality was bad (I think due to bad focusing :( ) and need to do some processing to made the Moon visible.

Have a nice day.

PS: Don't ask where is the Jupiter image I took... it was a failure imaging session :( :( I think focusing was out... but at least I got something out of the failure images... :)

Hi weixing,

Best rgds,
Chris
My location HP signal is very bad, so the reply sms fail to send :( :(

Anyway, should be observing tonight if weather is good. Site can't confirm yet, because it'll depend on my friend if he ask me out for observation. But should be at the field behind Bedok South Secondary School or at Tampines Mosque Field or the field opposite it. Will sms you again if confirm.

Have a nice day.

I saw a transit of one of the moon in front of Jupiter. I don't have the location of the moon positions but I saw one of the moon move pass Jupiter's face and cast a shadow onto Jupiter. It really looked cool. That was on Tuesday night at about 10 plus pm.

Thanks Weixing I did, and the view was gorgeous. :) Had to shove and push my portaball to my observing spot downstairs on my makeshift trolley. Perhaps I should make a cover for the portaball that makes it into a complete sphere, so I can just roll it along   :D
We do it in the dark...

can use this link to check. Don't need download/install just key in your location and select "GMT +8.00" and off you go.

http://www.gaac.us/GAACplanets.htm

It will be low in the west at that time, I may not have the luck to see it from my AMK location. Have to find a good opening on the west.

enjoy the shows (WorldCup vs Jupiter)... who will win??
