I had a Sphinx two years ago. I was excited to hear that they had added the autoguider feature but in reality it worked really badly with my SBIG STV. The DEC backlash was so bad that the STV could not drive it. You can see it just by using the Starbook. Using the lowest motion setting, you can move the RA easily back and forth with no unacceptable backlash. But try that with the DEC. You will have to keep pressing it to no discernable effect, and then suddenly it jumps unpredictably.

Unless they have improved the DEC since I have owned it, I wouldn't recommend the Sphinx for autoguiding astrophotogrpahy.

One last point- if you take care to polar align properly, you should be able to do piggy back photos of the sky with the Sphinx- it's decent enough for that.

Thanks Ivan for sharing your experience with us!

We will check our mounts and confirm if this is still a problem.

Cheers!
