SMART-1 to Crash the Moon

August 30, 2006:. A spaceship is about to crash into the Moon, and you may be able to see the impact.
The spacecraft: SMART-1, a lunar orbiter belonging to the European Space Agency (ESA).
The impact site: Lacus Excellentiae (The Lake of Excellence), an ancient, 100-mile wide crater in the Moon's southern hemisphere.
The time to watch: Saturday, September 2nd at 10:41 p.m. PDT (Sept. 3rd, 0541 UT).
Smart – 1 is running low on fuel. It has to come down sometime—and soon—so ESA mission scientists decided to crash it in a place where the crash can be seen from Earth and studied.

Hi,

As long as the space ship didn't carry a full load of nuclear weapon, I think it's mean those observatory and those with big telescope > 20" may be able to see the flash...

The time to watch: Saturday, September 2nd at 10:41 p.m. PDT (Sept. 3rd, 0541 UT).

It's afternoon in Singapore (1:41pm), so we won't be see it and the Moon haven't raise yet.

hi,

thanks Weixing for your info......I really thought that we are able to see the impact. :roll: becoz of the time different. I dun really understand the UT,PDT,ET.... etc what is their time different. Oh ya any obs this week?

understand the UT,PDT,ET

UT is the Universal Time... similar to GMT or UTC, so singapore is +8 hours.

Oh ya any obs this week?

Will like to have one if sky clear and no rain...

alamak no chance already lah like that.......anyway can someone explain to me what constellation up rite now in our hemisphere? becoz i dun see scorpious constellation and sagittarius rite out from my window....really miss that constellation...

I was at Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve for a night walk there last Saturday... I did see Scorpius and Sagittarius up there... even saw Vega (of Lyra) and Altair (of Aquila) in the northern sky... but that's about all I can see because the sky was rather hazy.

hi Alvin,
i notice last Sat and Sun the the sky was so hazy when i bring my family to Sentosa...all the while i've been referring to Southern hemisphere sky chart,can someone tell me whether i'm rite or wrong looking at this chart or maybe i should look into the northern hemisphere sky chart? :oops:

Hi Amin,
Because we are so near the Equator, we can see stars from either the north or the south... (of course not too far north or south, which would be better seen in the higher latitudes).

If you are at the beaches of Sentosa, then the southern skies would be better seen as there are no tall buildings and trees blocking the view. However, light pollution from the bright southern islands such as Pulau Bukom or Jurong Island may 'wash out' the part of the sky nearer the horizon.

I was in Batam (Sijori Batam Resort) at the end of April this year.... the sky was wonderful at night. For the first time, I spotted Crux (Southern Cross), Bootes and Hercules so clearly!
