Dob Mount Made to Order

This company actually specialises in building Dob mounts for OTAs for sizes up to 12.5"....maybe someone is interested here?
(Definitely not Arief as he always makes his own! Maybe he should open a franchise here..heh heh)

errr....he's closing down actually. read the press release. I ordered a collapsible dob mount from CPT last week ( www.astronomy-mall.com/FirstBase )

well..what kind of support would be expect? its a pure mechanical item with no electronics to fail. If some rework is required, I suppose worse comes to worse a local carpenter will be able to do it. But of course, if we paid that much, we would want some asssurance.

heh, support is quite impt in a customised dob. do remember the entire scope is made of wood, not metal and can't take alot of damage. given the size of the scope, it's pretty easy to get dings here and there. after few years of rough handling, u will soon see screws, bolts, etc coming off here and there. wood in contact with water will start warping, parts being glued together will start to come apart.

also do note, there are electrical components too. the dew heater, batteries, rigel finder. some may have argo navis or other dsc/goto. it's quite common for portaball owners to check the connection to see where it is loose.

it's fine, just wan to let others know that truss dobs are not entirely maintainance free. they are pretty fragile and doesn't take a beating like those takahashi/stellarvue scopes. but then, a little bit of glue and black paint here and there does the work nicely.

Yup it is surely much easier to keep a small scope in prestine condition as it won't get bang around while transporting.
