Moon transit of SOUNDING BALLOON!!!

Post by jiahao1986 »

Hi folks,

Just came back from an amazing observing session. Initially I wanted to try comet SWAN (though very little chance), I pointed my ETX125 to the position the comet should be at (to the right of Lambda Herculis), well, nothing...I looked more carefully and detected a suspicious object but couldn't tell whether it was the comet as it could also be distorted star image due to poor seeing...then the thunderstorm was rolling to that direction, failed to see my 11th comet...

Then I slewed the ETX to the moon and observed Plato for a while, surprisingly, this time I could see all the big four craterlets easily. I think it's due to different moon phases-those small craterlets are easier to view close to full moon like the lunar rays of Tycho, but one can't see the walls of them, again similar to other craters; when close to quarter moons, the craterlets are difficult to view due to less contrast to the plain floor of Plato but they are more crater like due to the casted shadows of their walls. Maybe Yang Beng should try viewing the craterlets close to quarter moons using his C5, to see whether the crater walls are visible.

Then, around 9pm, the biggest surprise of the night came when I was looking at Plato using 7mm Nagler at 270x, a SOUNDING BALLOON(the one for meteorological use) transited the moon, even Plato~~~!!! The shape was clearly visible - the balloon, about 1 arcminute in diameter, even changing its shape because of wind; and the equipment hanging to the balloon~~~this reminds me of 1996 when I saw a sounding ballon with NAKED EYE (my eyesight was perfect then...), which appeared as a tiny little dot against the clouds, then I took out my 6cm refractor and examined it carefully, also close to 1 arcminute in diameter.

Shortly after that, I saw a BIRD transit, very clear flying bird~~~So far I've seen moon transit of PLANE, SOUNDING BALLOON, BUGS, BAT and BIRDS, looking forward to my first satellite transit~~~

So WHAT KINDS OF MOON TRANSITS HAVE YOU EVER SEEN? This should be an interesting topic~~~

After the surprising transits, I was blessed with an moon occultation of the mag. 5.9 star 62 Piscium!!! Actually I found a star SUDDENLY appear to the edge of the view, then I kept track of it and finally at 9:57 it was occulted by the moon, the motion of the moon was so obvious when the star was getting closer, amazing~~~! Thanks to the wide FOV of TV Nagler~~~Besides, this is my first moon occultation of stars since 2001 January's total lunar eclipse, when the moon occulted Delta Gemini during totality, also an accidential ob, hehe

So overall, an amazing and memorable ob session despite the failure locating comet SWAN. Wish you folks good luck in your obs.
Clear skies please...

I was observing the moon with my C5 just now and I saw a bird flew across the face of the moon. It was a sharp black silhouette of probably a swallow (with scissor tail and scissor wing shape). It was nice as the bird was rather magnified at 73x. Earlier in the evening I saw a satellite occult the moon. It was orange colour! I tracked it with my bino. :)

Jiahao,
Hmm. shouldn't the 7mm T6 give you a magnification of 170x? Your scope is f/10 right?

My scope is f/15, so 271x. I think the 'Bird Transit' we saw is probably the same one as the one I saw fit to your description perfectly, and I was also using 73x  So this is a whole island event??? How high was the bird flying~~~???!!! just kidding...

Besides, about the satellite transit you saw, what's the magnification of your bino? can see the shape of it?

Hmm.. I think you are joking about the bird thing. It cannot be island wide as a swallow is so small in size and it should be quite near me. I am rather surprised to see a swallow as I have not seen a swallow in Singapore for a long long time. I only see them in Malaysia. Perhaps these swallows are hiding somewhere in Singapore...

I used a 10x42 Bino to see the satellite transit. Time was about 7.20pm. It was nice to see a satellite that is orange colour and appearing out of the moon. It was not moving that fast compared to other 'white' colour satellites I have seen. I could not see any detail except that it was slightly bigger than a star but featureless. It is not an airplane as it is not blinking and moving too slowly. Or maybe it was another balloon?

wow, that is really amazing to have such variable moon transits in one night. I just checked Calsky and found out there are many 'close to moon' satellites events next week and on Nov 6th at 1h58m32.11s, Beidou 1B LM Rocket is transiting the moon but maybe to small, only 0.4"... don't know if anyone is interested in that event

Hi,
I also saw something (a black dot) flew across the Moon a few times just now during my short Moon observation (22:30 - 23:30) using my portable setup (C5 + MicroStar)... not sure what is it because it was very fast.

Anyway, the sky was quite clear as it is basically around 90 degree of cloudless sky near the zenith in Tampines, but I think humidity was very high... I can feel the water in the air. As a result, my scope start to dew in just an hour and my dew heater is not ready yet... :(

By the way, also saw four craterlets in Plato, but I think my scope is out of collimation... will try to collimate tomorrow when I setup my tracking EQ mount. Hope it'll perform better after collimation.

By the way, I'll have an observation session in Tampines tomorrow if weather is good... but base on my past experience, it might rain tomorrow... *touch wood* :( :( :( Just hope that I'm wrong.

Hope tomorrow weather will be good.

Have a nice day.

 Probably more sounding balloons? Perhaps meteorologists in Singapore are releasing them like crazy because of good weather? hehe
