My opinion of two types of Solar filter

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

My opinion of two types of Solar filter

Post by mrngbss »

Hi,

I tried out Baader Solar film today while it was sunny. 8-) This film (aka home-made filter) gives an amazing white colour view of the Sun. Though I prefer a more egg yolk colour, but the white colour has its pluses.

Through this filter, I could see more details on the surface of the Sun, and the sunspots. A sun spot consists of a darker region and a lighter region(the edges). Using a Thousand Oaks filter, details were not too clear at the edges of the sunspot. But with this Baader brand filter, the edges were much more visible and clear. If i had a longer focal length scope, I'm sure there would be more surprises!

Thank for reading! Keep cool under the Sun! 8-)

I have both, and I prefer the Baader solar filter. I suspect people like the Thousand Oaks because it gives a 'color' view of the sun. For me, the contrast with the Baader solar filter is much better, even for photography.

Cheers!

This was taken just now around 9.30am. Only had a minute of bright sunlight, then the clouds came in. :(

Had wanted to do prime photography, but not enough back focus. Thus have to attach a diagonal to take pictures.
