My 1st Attempt on Solar Imaging . . .

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

My 1st Attempt on Solar Imaging . . .

Post by boothee »

Hi All,

As today is holiday and my home made solar filter is ready, I try to capture some avi of Sun. And process quickly.

I never tried Soler Imaging as I don't have any filter. Yesterday I got a plain Exposed X Ray Film form one of the hospital.

So I tried as river suggested me. Attached is the picture taken through X Ray Film.

Looking sun through XRay Film with naked eyes is very easy and you can see the sun in orange colour very beautifuly. But I didn't try looking through telescope. I'm afraid.

It would be very kind if some of you can explain why people don't use that method.

Cheers !!!

boothee

PS. You might not recognize it is a sunspot.
Edit colour a bit using ACD See to look better as original pictures looks more black and white even I capture in colour mode.

different filter give different feels, as long as you like it 8-)

I guess some of us here had used Xray sheet before and now they are moving on with other type of solar filter or special solar scope. I still keep my Xray sheet :)

XRay Film don't have UV protection. The amount of sun light pass through the XRay Film may not at safe level as proper solar filter.

Thank you very much for your kind info. Safety is very important! I'll never try again with naked eye.

Hmm... what if we wear a good pair of sunglasses that gives UV protection, and then look through the well-exposed X-ray film? :)

Another crazy idea just pop-up in my mind.... what if we smear sunblock cream on the X-ray film to cut off UV? :)

I afraid the quality of the X-ray film could not give a very solid sun disk...and if add a pair of sunglasses, may become a little bit dim...

If you can smear sunblock cream as perfect as those coating on our telescope lenses or mirror onto the x-ray film, then give it a try.

:) it is hobby, whats the fun if we do every thing in life by the book and do thing only to get best “marks” with best efficiency. That’s might be productive but too predictable and not creative…

Use Xray film for fun and "look" with a webcam, use other expensive solar scope and filter for more serious work.

I would not say trying some creative idea for fun is a total waste of energy, you either learn new things or simply add some fun to your life.

I think it is much easier for boothee to get Xray film than some solar filter there… that’s why I suggested that, I will never suggested to those who have many good equipment that kept in dry box most of the time. They can have great fun with their toys than a Xray film.

Necessity is the mother of invention... likewise, creativity drives innovation :)
