Hi Oilinki
Welcome to Singastro. Sounds really intriguing... Have always wanted to see a 'UFO'... :P I was at the Esplanade enjoying a nice sunset at about that time but unfortunately didn't see anything unusual :(

Thank you Acc,

I'm looking forward to see the talks about McNaught as it will on news in a couple of days.

Sorry to hear that you missed it. I was not exactly looking at the sky, but this one was something that just stroke to my eyes.

I'm also interested about the possibility that McNaught could be behind of this and also the US bolides. If the comet has broken down on previous visits and not we can see some parts of it.

Has the comet's route been calculated already? Is it coming directly from the asteroid belts for the first time or has it been here before? If so, when.

Oh... I have seen one 'unidentified' flying object more than 10 years ago that qualifies as a UFO! Illuminated saucer shaped with flashing lights beneath, and hovering for more than 1 hour. This was seen by many people in my camp, including my Duty Officer and Shift Commander. I think I did post on this forum before, sometime ago.

Hi,
Hmm... Anyway, there are two re-entry of space debris during that period of time:
1) Long March 4B Rocket Body ( http://www.reentrynews.com/2002049b.html ):
Predicted Reentry Time: 05 JAN 2007 @ 21:45 UTC ± 6 hours

2) Tsyklon Stage 3 Rocket Body ( http://www.reentrynews.com/1990104b.html )
Predicted Reentry Time: 07 JAN 2007 @ 19:20 UTC ± 18 hours

Just wonder is it possible that it actually a re-entry of any of the above???

Have a nice day.

Really cool that so many of you caught it! It is very rare to see something like that and you are lucky to have caught it.

It does seem somewhat of a coincidence that a bright fireball was seen in the US a couple of days back also..who knows; maybe they were shed from the same comet.

Too bad that it looks like it occured over the water. If it was a meteor we might even have recovered some meteorites.

Cheers,
Chris

I would say no for both. The first on is not on the time window.
The second one is has a wrong entry direction when looking at the track picture.

This one came definately on NW->SE direction. Funny btw. I tried to check my direction from google earth, but it was so close to US embassy that it was in restricted area for satelite pictures.

But again.. If we go further with the Tsyklon State 3 space junk trace, it would be quite close to Singapore. And also entry angle would be quite close.

It's always nice to speculate with different posibilities. :)

As said, it's still UFO, can not confirm it :)

Alot of stations were reporting. I heard it on 95.8fm barely 3hrs after the event.. My prediction is just space junk? or it might be one of those weixing mentioned above. It might even be one of those small meteorites in our low-earth orbit.. Who knows? But those who caught it, I must say they are very lucky.. I was working indoors at that time.

It's definitely not the UFO. Of all times to visit the Earth, this is definitely not a good one, especially with our monsoon still on!

Still. Not a small one (small is a size of a sand grain) as it broke down to several parts. Definitely bigger one.

Please do understand the meaning of UFO which I was referring to. Unidentified flying object. This does not mean 'hillibilly' flying disks or anything. Just an object that can not be defined by scientific standards. :)

I agree with the luck. I have been interested of the astronomy for the past 20+ years and never have experienced anything like this.

I read in today's Straits Times that someone suggested this could have been a green flash. I have seen one type of green flash before, a green tint at the tip of the sun as it sinks down the horizon. While we cannot rule out a green flash yet, I don't think the description of the object seen by eye-witnesses (broken into 5 pieces etc) fits the characteristics of a green flash.
