First trial on my modified 350D - The Rosette Nebula

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

First trial on my modified 350D - The Rosette Nebula

Post by cataclysm »

I finally summoned enough courage to modify my canon 350D, in order to enhanced the spectral sensitivity of the cmos sensor. & boy oh boy ! It pays off handsomly!
The sky finally opened up on Monday evening and I grabed the opportunity to test it out on the Rosette nebula at Monoceros. This nebula is rich in star forming H II, a good way to test out the camera's newly acquired sensitivity on the red end of the spectrum. In our urban skies, all that most people can see visually at this region of the sky is a small loose cluster of stars known as NGC 2244 at the heart of the nebula.

All the subframes were taken at ISO1600 with the help of Astronomik narrow band UHC filter and Genesis SDF. The exposures were as follow;27x60s, 10x80s & 15x90s. The final image was stacked and processed by Imagesplus.

Nice image....
Do let everyone know how you modified your 350D.
I think the first step is to take out an internal filter or something to that effect?

Put up your mod in the relevant sub-forum and make it a 'sticky'!

cataclysm,

nice shot with lot of detail in the rosette!

Would it be possible that you upload your astrophotos into the album rather than as an attachment? Yes, you'll have to click the link to view it, but at least the photos can be browsed easily. Otherwise, a user won't be able to find the photos within all those threads.

Cheers,
Chris

Yes, modifying a digital camera is simply by removing the internal limiting filter, thus opens up the camera to a wider spectrums of 'light'. However by just removing filter wouldn't do. It will screwed up the normal focusing ability of camera on normal daylight photography but also more important issue is that the cmos/ccd is exposed to the elements that caused undesirable effects on the pictures. A clear filter is used to replaced the original hot mirror to solved the problems. This link best explains how you can modify your camera.

Its is a bit daunting to diy the modification but is really do..able!
