FS: Skywatcher 127 Mak Cass

Hi all,

I'm selling off my Sky-Watcher Maksutov-Cassegrain 127mm OTA
http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/MAKSP.html.

As from the website, package consists of
- 127mm OTA
- Red Dot Finder (new rechargable Li battery installed)
- 25mm Plossl eyepiece
- 10mm Plossl eyepiece
- 90° Mirror diagonal
- Carrying bag
additional item (included in sale):
- 45° erect prism

Optics unscratched and clean. No detectable image shift during focusing.
I always store the tube and all accessories (excluding bag) in dry box when not in use, basically almost everyday.

Light enough to be mounted on a decent photo tripod through the standard 1/4" screw thread.

Asking $500.

Why are you selling? This scope has good optics for its price. Last time I used to have one and I may get a Mak again, but maybe the 150 version.

I'm selling cos I'm thinking of getting a 6" SCT.

Can call it an 'upgrade'

Hmm, great. Astronomy is like a black hole, you get sucked into it and buy more and more, hee.

You can consider 1 shot upgrade to c8 which I am selling. I can let go a GP2 head in addition, to hold the scope.

Hi,

Oh, 3 weeks ago I just sold a Skywatcher 127mm to my friend. I was planning to get an Orion Mak 150 next time. Hope to get bigger than 127 but the Orion mak 180 is too massive, so 150 will be a good compromise.

Unless you want to buy a Nexstar 6 and benefit from goto, my advice is don't bother to upgrade. 1" difference will not be significant at all.
As a rule of thumb, you need to increase the aperture diameter by 50% to see improvement. Hence to upgrade from a 5" scope, the next option is 8".

If you are doing it for the goto, then go for the N6. Really saves alot of time finding objects especially in Singapore skies where you can't see many of the fainter guide stars.

really appreciate all your advices. Oops.. guess I used a wrong word but couldn't find another word than 'upgrade'.

I'm selling this scope because I'm thinking of buying the 6" SCT from a friend and he have many accessories for it that I can borrow.

Airconvent: thanks for the info! I'm already using a CG-5 goto mount

Actually, I saw quite a big improvement of image when I upgrade from Mak 127 to a 6" Newtonian. Anyway, IMHO, there'll be obvious improvement for every inch below 10, but after that improvement for every inch is not that significant. The only issue is: do you think is the improvement it worth it??

Also, you may want to take a look at the amount of $$ you spend to increase 1 inch vs to increase a few inch such as to a 8" scope. If the difference is not great and you are able to handle a larger scope, why not??

Hi weixing
Could it be due to the design and quality of the lens/mirror that make up for the difference? I have compared the image from my 4" ETX and 5" C5 and could not make out any difference between the 2 at all...
