Green Goblins

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Green Goblins

Post by Canopus Lim »

I have completed my planetary eyepiece collection. :) All 'green' eyepieces but not all Televue. :P The latest Baader Genuine Orthos have passed my planetary test with flying colours. I would highly recommend them for the performance and price (99 usd).

Last friday I compared the performance of my 6mm Baader GO (Genuine Ortho) with my 6mm volcano top ortho on Jupiter. The Baader GO has better contrast on the belts and showed slightly more detail especially on the low contrast areas at the poles. :) Also, the sky background was a lot darker than the volcano top ortho; it was not easy to see the field stop due to the darkness! The Baader GO is a 'cool' eyepiece and hence Jupiter looks rather white but has lots of details still. My Televue eyepieces (by barlowing) are slightly warmer in colour and Jupiter would look more 'yellowish/ brown' so I can have different perspective on the planet with my differenet eyepieces.

For belts and small storms the cool eyepieces are good, however for looking at colour and detail within the GRS or Red Spot Junior, warm eyepieces like Televue plossls/ Naglers would do a better job at bringing it out.

Attached is the picture of my Genuine Orthos. They are on the left.

Do you have any problem with the eye reflief for the 5mm and 6mm Ortho?

I don't have problem with the eye relief and shape of the eyepieces. I won't be sure if others will have problems as some people's eye lashes are longer and this would mean cleaning the eyepieces more frequently.

Anyway, for the 5mm ortho the eye relief is about 4mm. The 6mm ortho's eye relief is about 5mm. For me, shorter than 4mm would mean a high chance of contaminating the eyelens with my eye lashes and that would degrade the performance of the eyepiece until it is cleaned up; which cannot be done safely in the field.

Since a lot of people use SCTs and Maks with f/10 and above, these orthos would perform very well for critical observing of faint/low contrast planetary/lunar/DSO details. If I am not wrong Abbe orthos like the Baaders will be sharp to the edge on f/7 or f/8 and longer focal ratio. For casual observers, I guess the normal UO volcano top ortho or Televue plossls are good enough and slightly cheaper when bought new.
