CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!
It's been some clear nights since, but with the disturbing moon in place, it is hydrogen-alpha imaging once again. Here is a three-frame mosaic of the Lagoon Nebula, with a mix of previous data (on the central portion) together with new data that covers the peripheral regions. Each frame is a combined stack (of 4 sub-exposures) of 20 minutes each. Image has been scaled down considerably and obtained with the TOA and a 6nm filter.
yes. it is still possible to take this object with the moon around for the colour channels, but in particular, the green channel will be extremely noisy (where moonlight affects most) together with usual "noise base" light pollution domes present towards the west from my location. As a result, the colour data will not be as deep and rich and will result in lots of colour noise (with the effect of the background of the image will look moltened). Also, there is a capture limit time for this object from my balcony, which is at 2AM, when the object is too high and is obstructed, hence there was only enough time to take with the hydrogen alpha filter. Each frame takes 4x20 minutes or 1hr 20minutes to complete, and for a weekday night, can't stay up for too long!
