Live video shots from Mallicam HyperPlus Colour

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Live video shots from Mallicam HyperPlus Colour

Post by VinSnr »

Here are some video shots "as seen" from the LCD monitor. All 14 seconds integration by the camera. All single frame. Peltier was not on.

There are a few others like Eagle Nebula which can be seen at 14 seconds but just barely due to a very wash-out sky.

I did not try integration of 28 seconds and 56 seconds. Next time might just try that. The above is just a sample of what can be seen on a live monitor. However, I think pictures cannot replace the wow factor when viewing them live.

Hi Vincent,

Very nice color from the video.
The Stellacam II we used before is B/W.
Which camera and setup did you use ?

Mallincam Hyper Colour Plus. Scope is a 8" f/4 reflector.

This camera on your 12" or 14" would be amazing.

Does the Mallincam works well on the Planets as well ?
How much does the package cost ?
I have a viewing with a church group this Friday evening with the 12" at the Pasir PA campsite. If you have the time to spare I will love to test it on my 12".
BTW, which monitor do you normally use onsite to view the video.
I found those portable 6-7" LCD too low in resolution for a good view.
Probably a portable 21" LCD will do justice to the view.

you should have shrink the image by half to 320 x 240

Think the package is about US$1200++.

It does work on Planets, but have to try the settings. I have not tried it on planets before. But if you get the exposure right, I am sure it can be done.

For monitor, I just use a 8" LCD. It uses 12VDC, so easy to get power.

For those bigger LCDs, problem is how to get 220VAC in the field.

Anyway, I think this video is great for public events or group observations. To queue for the eyepiece should be a thing of the past. I use my eyepieces only for my own observations or for collimation.

I think if you have a broadband light pollution filter it will work even better. Problem with video is that the integration also brighten the sky background and you will soon realised that our sky is not exactly black but reddish due to the light pollution. So objects which are red and has low surface brightness will have difficulty unless we can filter out the light pollution. Having said that, the shape of the Eagle in M16 can still be seen despite the light pollution although just barely. I have never seen the shape of the eagle in singapore skies using eyepieces.

If it is a MUST to get 220VAC, then use a DC to AC converter with a bigger capacity battery (at least 50Ah). If the bigger monitor can run on DC, then the big battery will do.

yeah thought about that before but 50Ah battery is very heavy. I had enough of heavy loads already.

I had seen a 15" LCD that uses 12VDC. But didn't buy it ..haiz...

Big batt can be kept in the boot of your car, don't need to carry it and for charging, your car can help you too. Just need to run a long wire to reach the monitor. @ Turf city, this wire can be short.

By the way, the 15" LCD that uses 12VDC, what is the wattage? Run time for the monitor will be <= (Batt Capacity * 12 / Monitor wattage) hours. So, small cap batt, the monitor will go off in no time.
