visting Singapore from US, need to borrow/rent scope
I will be coming from New Jersey, US to Singapore at the beginning of August. Can anyone help me in borrowing or renting a scope (be willing to leave a deposit) from a local club so I can see the stars from Malaysia or one of the islands without Singapore's light pollution. Clear skies--Ed.

Hi Edgoon,
Welcome, if you come by near the new moon weekend (Aug 11), you can join the guys here to the eastern part of Malaysia about 100 miles from Singapore for overnight ob. Normally, the guys will leave Singapore about 2~3 pm and reach there early evening for dinner before head for the site. Do find out about the site from the attached link.

The guys here will bring along a few 10~12.5" dob and others for the ob. Hope I can join the trip too.

Let me know what scope type you need and and will quote you if I can
find one.

Hi edgoon
Welcome to Sg. Glad you are planning to do star-gazing in Malaysia rather than Singapore
I have a 100mm F6 Orion achro refractor that I can lend to you with free but would request a S$200 deposit. Its quite portable and if you wish, the lens cell can be unscrewed from the OTA if you are not anal about collimation. OTA has tube-rings and dovetail. No mount though.

Re: visting Singapore from US, need to borrow/rent scope
Lee, thanks much for taking the time to respond. Of course any scope that I can borrow would be appreciated, but portability is an issue since I would probably take some boat or rail away from Singapore for a few days. That probably limits apertures to 100-150 mm with an alt-azimuth tripod mount (lighter). I think a DOB, which is what I have at home, would be hard to transport. Don't need GO-TO since I'll star hop. Any type would be OK, refractor, Newtonian, Schmidt-Cessegrain, etc.Lee wrote:Hi edgoon,VinSnr wrote:probably can look for Wee Kiong. VinSnr, thanks much for replying. This is very generous of you and I'd like to take you up on this but there's still the issue of a mount, so I'll see if I can conjure something up.acc wrote:Hi edgoon

That sounds great. Vinsr says he has an 100mm Orion OTA that I could borrow, so an EQ2 mount should do the trick. I would prefer an alt-azimuth since it's a few pounds lighter than a GEM, but whatever you have would be much appreciated. Thanks. You can email me direct at edgoon@yahoo.com. I will be arriving July 30 thru August 18, so somewhere in the middle I'll swing by. Again, thanks so much for the hospitality. VinSnr, I would like to take you up on your generous offer. rcj says he has some spare mounts. Sounds like a marriage. Could you contact me through my yahoo account at edgoon@yahoo.com to make arrangements. My kids and I thank you. It'll be a great once in a lifetime experience for them and me to able to see some of the southern constellations. I'm hoping eta carinae is still high enough to see.
