Mersing this weekend (11 August)?

Post by starfinder »

Are there plans to go up to Mersing this weekend, Saturday night (11 August)? New Moon. The skies seem to have cleared up recently after the month-long blanket.

I think the Perseids meteor shower peak would be on Sunday 12 August night US time.

A friend of mine might be interested in driving up with some of his friends.

BTW, about a week ago, whilst on a flight north, I saw what looked like a long bridge under construction across Sungei Johor, in southeast Johor. I think this is the long-planned and long-delayed bridge that would allow a short-cut from JB to Desaru, instead of having to go via Kota Tinggi. I took a photo of it, but unfortunately, I can't upload pictures anymore to the forum as I have run out of space entitlement. I think the bridge was only about 30% complete.

Hi,
I can't upload pictures anymore to the forum as I have run out of space entitlement.
You can manage your attachment using the "User Attachment Control Panel" in your profile. I think some attachment no longer exist, but the entry is still there.

Anyway, please note that the attachment function is basically use for attach temporary image (eg. such as item picture for buy and sell) or non-image files. Since the Album got a larger quota, you can post your image in the correct Album and link it using the image tag.

Have a nice day.

I've a map of Johor, it was indicated in it that a new highway will be built connecting Senai to Tg Balau (Fisherman Meseum) passing thru S.Johor near Kong Kong on one side and Tg.Penyabong and the other and will also pass thru near Desaru Fruit Farm. The junction of this highway @ Jalan Kota Tinggi will be around Taman Perindustrian Cemerlang. Est to cut about 1/3 of the distance from Jln Kota Tinggi junction to Desaru Fruit Farm.

Was at Kg Tk Sengat by S.Johor last Sep, saw construction activities for the bridge. Hope they complete the highway the soonest so that we can save some time to Desaru.

Tks for the info, but I didn't know the monsoon starts in August? I thought it was later, around October.

Anyway, the following is taken from NEA's website on the Climatology of Singapore:
http://app.nea.gov.sg/cms/htdocs/article.asp?pid=1088

SEASONS:

North-East Monsoon Season- December to early March
Northeast winds prevail, sometimes reaching 20 km/h. Cloudy conditions in December and January with frequent afternoon showers. Spells of widespread moderate to heavy rain occur lasting from 1 to 3 days at a stretch. Relatively drier in February till early March. Also generally windy with wind speeds sometimes reaching 30 to 40 km/h in the months of January and February.

Pre South-West Monsoon - late March to May
Light and variable winds with afternoon and early evening showers often with thunder.

South-West Monsoon Season - June to September
Southeast/Southwest Winds. Isolated to scattered late morning and early afternoon showers. Early morning 'Sumatra' line squalls are common. Hazy periods.

Pre North-East Monsoon - October to November
Light and variable winds. Sea breezes in afternoon. Scattered showers with thunder in the late afternoon and early evening.

And the following are taken from the Malaysian Meteorological Dept's website:

The northeast monsoon usually commences in early November and ends in March. During this season, steady easterly or northeasterly winds of 10 to 20 knots prevail. The more severely affected areas are the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia where the wind may reach 30 knots or more during periods of intense surges of cold air from the north (cold surges).

Seasonal Rainfall Variation in Peninsular Malaysia

The seasonal variation of rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia is of three main types:

(a) Over the east coast districts, November, December and January are the months with maximum rainfall, while June and July are the driest months in most districts.

(b) Over the rest of the Peninsula with the exception of the southwest coastal area, the monthly rainfall pattern shows two periods of maximum rainfall separated by two periods of minimum rainfall. The primary maximum generally occurs in October - November while the secondary maximum generally occurs in April - May. Over the northwestern region, the primary minimum occurs in January - February with the secondary minimum in June - July while elsewhere the primary minimum occurs in June - July with the secondary minimum in February.

(c) The rainfall pattern over the southwest coastal area is much affected by early morning "Sumatras" from May to August with the result that the double maxima and minima pattern is no longer discernible. October and November are the months with maximum rainfall and February the month with minimum rainfall. The March - April - May maximum and the June -July minimum are absent or indistinct.

What are Singastro members' own experience with Mersing's weather, seasonally speaking, e.g. what months have genreally clear or poor weather, etc?

Oops... after reading this (http://www.kjc.gov.my/english/education ... oon01.html), I should not say monsoon, but 'rainy season'!

Actually, I'm speaking from BKK point of view (which I am now). According to the locals, the rainy season has just started. And looking out at the window for the past 2 weeks, I should say I agree!

Ok, tks for the tip. I have uploaded the photo of the bridge under constuction over Sungei Johor in Southeast Johor. It is now in my album:

http://www.singastro.org/album_showpage.php?pic_id=892

I took the photo in end-July 2007.

[Addition]:
Some info on the bridge may be found here:

http://www.llmnet.gov.my/serverpages/hi ... ghwayid=35

http://en.structurae.de/structures/data ... d=s0018415

It is part of the proposed 77km Senai-Desaru Expressway, to be completed in around 2008. It was apparently earlier shelved years ago due to the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, and has been restarted. I had thought it would never be built!

hi guys,

there are hot spots all over kalimantan and sumatra right now... we are lucky that the wind directions are not blowing the haze towards us at the moment, but this may change anytime. This year is likely to be La Nina period, and the usual monsoonal seasons may not apply in the usual months. Blame it on global warming, etc. Nevertheless, till the haze really comes (or maybe not), try to go while the weather permits, and grab every chance you have got. Will continue to monitor on our systems and update NEA....
