Total Lunar Eclipse: 28 Aug 2007
there is an article on forthcoming lunar eclipse in today's (saturday) straits times. i would not worry too much about the exact timings, because totality will be over by the time the moon rise and high enough to see. nevertheless, it will be interesting to see the timings put forth by the papers and the commentary giving on what we can expect to see during the eclipse on the right column of the article.

I think i will head down to East Coast Park on Tuesday, somewhere around the McDonalds or former Big Splash, after work. Hope to arrive just before 7pm. Would bring a pair of 10x50 binos if I do go.opteron wrote:anyone going or organising a trip?
From there, there should be an unobstructed view out to sea (infinity) to the azimuth bearing of the Moon (99.8 degrees, or 10 degrees south of due East).
BTW, as some side info, mid-totality (or Full Moon in normal periods) would also be the moment of the Moon's Opposition.
Here is a site with an animation of the eclipse that IMHO shows very clearly what totality means together with how it looks to the observer. Based on TheSky, the moon will rise at 7:10PM, and with the moon out of the totality region (umbral) at 7:22PM, the moon is only going to be about 2 degrees above the horizon. Visually, this is the time when "a bit of white" will start appearing on the moon's surface which is expected to be copperly reddish with yellowish hues then, and this is based on the assumption that atmospheric refraction has no contribution. In actual fact, the colours at that time should be slurred towards warmer hues. It would still probably make quite a sight though, especially for those viewing or imaging from the eastern beaches or high locations. I will catch the event from my balcony, at most hopeful of a partial eclipse image.

Animation of Eclipse
Hi Remus,
Beautiful animation. Now I will not feel bad even if I miss the real one.

Hi,
There will be a Live Streaming of the Lunar Eclipse in discovery channel website, so at least we still can see the lunar eclipse if the weather is bad:

Good luck and have a nice day.

That's a very interesting and informative animation!
I have just looked at the eastern sky at (7:10pm) today. It is still quite bright. I don't think the Moon would be much discernable tomorrow at that time. However, at about 7:20pm, it appears to be just about dark enough.
As for the viewing location, I have just realised by looking at Google Earth that I would have an unobstructed view to 99 degrees (10 degrees south of due East) from my office carpark rooftop at Shenton Way. Will therefore try to observe from there tomorrow, instead of East Coast Park.
