sheer challenge for tonight's moon shots

Post by opteron »

moon tonight. really damn round. but there were high level clouds, cant even see the stars.

shooting the moon tonight posed the greatest challenge to me ever where astro is concerned. often i had to worry and compensate for shift after locking the tripod head in position and also the moving of moon out of frame while adjusting focus.

this time round, I had to aim directly vertical. I didn't even have to worry about lens shift because i can just rotate the ball into a portrait position and leave it there, i don't even have to lock it in position. Plus, i never had to reposition the camera, the moon never left my frame.

but unlike my arms and legs, my neck doesn't have that many joints  so i can't just look through the viewfinder to adjust focus. i ended up bending my body beside my sister's car, my head tilting. the only reason my neighbour didn't call the police is because it's already 1am :P

ok..enough OTing..

Time to get a right angle viewer. If you are using a Canon body, they make a pretty good 6X one. Nikon should have a version of it too.

Hi opteron,

What scope did you use for this? or the 500mm lens?

500mm. i reckon the poor res is due to the camera sensor's low LPM

Do they have a 6x version?? I got a third party 2x version... not bad and also not expensive.

Have a nice day.

Ah.. they changed it. It used to be 6X. Now it is 1.25X to 2X zoom. I used to use an F3 with the 6X waist finder for astro film. That was fun to use!!
