2 new SV telescopes announced!!

Post by vhuang168 »

The first 2 'new' telescope have been announced by Stellarvue at the ETS.

1st is an air spaced 115mm triplet priced at $2500 barebones. Outfitted with rings and everything else will put it around $2900 iirc.

2nd is an oil spaced 160mm triplet priced at $6999 I think.

I was not present at the show so don't have any details. The website has not been updated with new info either. But I'm excited about the SV115. Looks like I'll have to sell off my (1 or 7) SV95T soon!!

Details are up on these.

SV115T
SV160

Looks great!! Can't wait for my SV160 to finally get here. Might have the SV115T first though.

1st is an air spaced 115mm triplet priced at us$2500 barebones.
If it were us$500 less, it will compete favorably with at111 triplet (now usd$1800). I don't think the 0.16" aperture difference worth the us$700 difference, but that's just me

Ah.. won't know till someone's actually compared the 2. If the AT111 is as well corrected and made, then the SV is going to have some tough competition.

I am a big fan because they are 1 of the last good telescope makers left in the US. It also helps that they are local to me. It also seems to me that they keep getting lumped together with AT and other 'importers' vs being classed as a true telescope manufacturer. Heck, even the mighty APM doesn't make any of its lens in house. SV has just spent a whole bunch of money on lens polishing machinery and testing equipment. That makes them a step more towards being a manufacturer than just a company that sells telescopes.

I've also had the chance to look thru many of their scopes as well as owning other 'top tier' telescopes (eg my AP180 and AP155, doesn't get any top tier than those 2). And IMHO, there isn't any difference visually between the 2 brands. So why would I want to spend more and wait gazillion years to own an AP when I can spend a little less and wait much less and get something equivalant? The Hao Xiao factor aside that is.

Next time I go back, I'll try and bring an SV scope for you guys to check out. Maybe the 102ED or something newer and you guys can compare to whatever you guys want.

Resale value? there will come a time when we need to sell our scope to finance another one, and only with AP scopes you can sell it higher than the price you bought it.

If I were to buy a big APO, it must be an AP and nothing else. And it is meant to be kept in the case and nothing else. Not for observation, not for testing it, etc..nothing.

I notice that AP scopes tend to double (or close to double) in price every 5-7 years. That's a bloody good rate on investment returns. No other scopes can do this.
