Upcoming Meteor Shower Quadrantid 4th Jan

Post by MooEy »

For those interested meteor showers and have missed the previous geminids. There's an upcoming meteor shower on the 4th jan, which happens to be on a friday.

An extract from S&T "Also in January the Quadrantid meteor shower peaks. This is a short but strong display — up to 100 meteors per hour might be seen after midnight on the 4th. And between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 18th, the 10-day-old Moon slides past the Pleiades Star Cluster. Binoculars and small telescopes provide the best views."

ZHR seems pretty strong, and it is a pretty moonless night. Seems like we are blessed with 2 gd meteor showers in such a short period. Pray weather holds up.

I do have my private session, those interested in coming must pay in advance.

I guess this meteor shower will not favour us much. The radiant is just too near to the horizon.
Clear skies,

The session that I'm having includes a bbq. So interested participant have to pay $7 for the food. Have to inform the organiser in advance.

Actually i'm not so worried abt the radiant thing. More worried abt weather.

I thought since the radiant is so damn low and possibly hidden, our result will be very poor? Anyway, have fun with the BBQ. Maybe a meteor is going to land on the fire pit. lol

From what I check from SpaceWeather sky map. The radiant lies at the center of Ursa Minor, Big Dipper, Bootes, Corona Borealis and Hercules. We can hardly see these constellations. We can see Ursa Major but most of the time hidden by poor horizon atmospheric condition or buildings.

I don't have great favor over this meteor shower. :( Maybe next year when I travel to high latitude country. Haha~ However, the ZHR seems to be good, around 50 meteors/hour between 1000-1500 UT8.
Clear skies,
Robin.

The blocking of the light is not that great but what I worry is the smoke will damage the coating.
