ST : "Dimmer lights cut costs for LTA "

Good news for local astronomy ??

"... ... As for dimmer street lighting, it has considered switching off alternate street lights to conserve energy, but dropped the idea because the 'zebra effect' would tire motorists and create a driving hazard."

Is this argument valid ? What is the "zebra effect" ?

"He said he was stopped recently at 11pm by gangsters in an East Coast Road underpass, even though it was more brightly lit than the one at Buona Vista. He managed to get away."

Maybe the gangsters needed the good lighting to identify their potential victims better ?

So for those who go East Coast to see stars, be careful okie ?

Zebra Effect? It's an effect where there is a sudden increase in light and decrease in light, something like a zebra stripe. It will cause tireness to the eyes, especially to drivers.

Haha, looks like they did consider the switching off of alternate street lamps afterall huh? Thought of it too, so that our astronomy group can benefit...

Personally, i think the street lamps esp. those at the expressways (i live right beside the PIE!!!) are already so near, doing the alternate doesn't really make a difference and shouldn't create the zebra effect...

Dimmer lights would always be better for us astronomers, right?
Too bad they are using energy saving lights which needs to be operated at a fixed power output unlike filament bulbs where you can easily dimmed down.
Problem iin singapore is alot of light is pointed skyward which waste power. They should have installed a mirrored top to reflect all light back down to street level...

I agree with Richard in his statement, and this is especially severe for parks which uses those 'full spherical orbs', and this limits the locations where we can observe from. If proper light fixtures are used which direct light downwards only, our current problem of light pollution can be reduced without affecting the lighting requirements or safety/security issues. Some cities in USA have already set a good example and regulated for good night lighting.
