Moon terminator mosaic 27/03/08

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Moon terminator mosaic 27/03/08

Post by rcj »

Hi all,

Managed to find some right time to tinker with Imaging Source's DMK21 camera on the 5-inch refractor. The moon was positioned at around 45 degrees and there were no cumulus around, considerably well placed from the balcony. Thought it was a splendid time to check out the DMK's performance and first light on the lunar terminator surface after using the CCD on Eta Carinae earlier on. However, did not have a high powered barlow around, only managed to take some test shots of the surface with the Q1.6X instead. It was indeed a nice step-up from the Toucam. Very responsive, no more drop frames, frames accumulated at 60 frames per second, and there was a generous choice of 50 frames from about 1800. Taken uncompressed, noted very little posterization. The seeing was below average, but noise level was really low, the flexibility in exposure, gamma, and many other settings were greater then those that came with Toucam drivers. It was also easier to reach a known focus point, but if the seeing was excellent, it would have been a greater breeze.
