Watch online BBC's "The Sky at Night" by Patrick M

Post by starfinder »

I chanced upon this BBC webpage the other day:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/spac ... kyatnight/

From it, you can watch current and back episodes (since Dec 2001) of the monthly BBC TV documentary "The Sky At Night", which has been hosted for over 50 years by the veteran Mr. Astronomy himself, 85-yr old Patrick Caldwell Moore, of deep-sky catalog fame. I think Patrick Moore is to stars what Sir David Attenborough is to wildlife, both legendary presenters.

I have watched some of the episodes already. Some which I found quite good include:
- Nov 2007: on a Perseids meteor watch, quite entertaining
- July 2007: on objects in the constellation Scorpius (poor northerners!)
- Feb 2006: on the telescope observatories atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii
- March 2005: on comets and the Kuiper Belt, Oort Cloud

Note that the video quality of the recent episodes are quite poor (over compressed), whilst the older episodes are of much better quality.

I'm pretty impressed with this guy who has the longest rumning TV series EVER! I watched a very very old episode when he was still a young man and in b&w and without his trademark monocular and its amazing.

Recently I got a complete free episode as part of a gift for Sky At Night magazine.

My only gripe with the show is he has a tendency to mumble and I do have diffuculty tryingto catch his exact words sometimes...wished they would include subtitles..

Thanks for the link, Gavin!
