Minor planet 5 Astraea

Post by JY »

Hi,

The minor planet 5 Astraea shines at magnitude 10, between Virgo and Libra.
It's a 125 km diameter rock in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter.

I took some image this week end,

Hi Jean-Yves,
Interesting pics and nice comet chart!
This is the first time anyone I came across has ever imaged an asteroid (that's what a minor planet is, right?).

I guess its because they are not much to look at, just a piece of rock? ..:-)
People probably find comets more fascinating due to the origin but more importantly, due to their characteristic tail..

Care to give some details like what scope (12" LX200??) , camera and settings?

Hi Rich,

I'm using a LX200GPS 12" on my house balcony, used in alt-az mode with a field derotator.

Camera is a SBIG ST8.
This rock is so bright that I did not need any guiding, images are 15 seconds exposure.

I wanted to image more into the night but then it was too high up in the sky (80 deg altitude at 3 am).

Cheers
