You can get a $30~$40 tripod (2nd hand will be cheaper), it should be able to handle up to 15x70 bino. However, to mount the bino onto the tripod, you need a tripod mount.

If you know anyone going to HK, ask the person to go to Grandeye and help you to buy the bino, very good pricing, of course not the best bino, good viewing no problem at all. You can also order over e-mail, he can ship to you, but you need to pay for the shipping cost and you need to wire the money to him. Grandeye Bino Webpage

And you'll need to get a Vixen tripod adapter if you want to mount the binoculars to a tripod, cause it's not included. By the way, you also need to get planisphere to find some stars, or else you'll have to print your own star charts. I started off with the planisphere, and I'm still using the planisphere. I'll move on to star charts and more when I'm better with the sky.

Oops, I forgot to tell you that Jim takes his time to reply to emails because they actually have a customer hotline for you to make purchases quickly. You can call them and confirm your order, and set an appointment/meeting time to purchase the item. You can get the number from McGill's homepage.

If McGill did ran out of stocks, then Robin from StarOptics should have some Vixen binoculars in stock. You can check them out here, but note that all prices are in USD. I've checked for you and the Vixen Ascot ZR 8x42 costs US$158 at Staroptics, and they also sell the tripod adapter which you'd need for tripod mounting the binoculars. The price is US$28 for the tripod adapter, although I don't think you'll need any tripod at all for a starter. You should learn how to identify the stars and constellation before moving on to more advanced stuff.

I wouldn't invest so much on a pair of binoculars, but instead save up for a scope. A pair of binoculars is just to get you started on astronomy as it's cheaper and more portable as compared to a scope. I bought it to test my interest in astronomy, and if I have growing interest within the next year or so, I'll be getting a scope pretty soon after that. (:

greensoul wrote:I'm looking for astronomy binocular. Hoping that the expertise in here can recommend me one. i'm a beginner.

1) I will use it to see moon eclipse, and maybe some star at night.

2) I hope the binocular will allow me see detail moon crater. ( the most detail I can get from a binocular)

3) I hope the binocular will last me at least 5 year with care.

4) Price range: Less than S$400 (best from S$200 to S$300)
Telescope within S$500 are also welcome.

5) Binocular suitable for use in Singapore (I live at Sembawang, near MRT)

6) If possible Night Vision binocular are welcome.

7) IMPORTANT!! Please also tell me where can i buy from. (If in sim lin, please state the price and store name, cause easy to get chop there with no recommendation)

8) Possible a few sentence on why you recommend it to me. (personal review are welcome)

I understand that beginner should use a binocular with big Field of vision. but I dont mind if the Field Of Vision is small, i just want detail.

I'm watching the eclipes today and I REALLY hate that i did not have a binocular in my hand.
THANK YOU!
Since your primary target is moon, a telescope actually serves you better. A binocular is most suitable for widefield objects like constellations, star field and so on.
Clear skies,
Robin.

What's your budget?

For planetary observing, I think ETX-90PE or ETX125PE are very good at delivering fantastic and contrastic image.
Clear skies,
