Orion Nebula in Narrowband, My First Attempt

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Orion Nebula in Narrowband, My First Attempt

Post by Meng Lee »

Hi all,

My first attempt on full narrowband imaging of Orion Nebula

Scope: Vixen ED 115 with reducer
Filters: Baader Ha, SII, OIII
Ha = 30 mins
SII = 40 mins
OIII = 30 mins

Colour Palatte : RGB = HSO

It looks noisy due to the poor data from SII and the background colour looks strange due to the poor data from SII also.

Hi Meng Lee, nice attempt! Lots of details, yes the picture will smooth out with more data. Is your camera cooled? ............I shot this all time favourite a couple of nights ago in narrowbands with 350D, yet to process it....... [smilie=good-job.gif]

Nice attempt! I also learned by experience that you need LOTS of data for SII. Ha and OIII are abundant in nebulae but SII is pretty tricky! Try 1:3:2 for Ha:SII:OIII.

Other than color and noise, it is a great attempt for 1st try.

Hi all,

Thanks for all that. I think it is quite fun to try all these false colour images. At least imaging in urban areas + half a moon is not about trying to remove gradients!

Oh Kelvin, the Atik camera is cooled.

I think based on the histograms I see, I suggest the ratio Ha : SII : OIII = 1 : 5 : 1.2 in order to match S/N of all channels to achieve real narrowband imaging for Orion Nebula.

Guys, share your processed pics soon :) [smilie=cute.gif]

So, Zongye, itching for the DSI 3 now? hehe

Anyway, this is in the Hubble space telescope colour scheme. Notice the characteristic red stars.
