CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Help to ID wierd object around M42

Post by swat_pup6433 »

hi,
while taking a closer look at the M42 i took quite some time ago in punggai, I realized that there is a strange ring around a star near the M42 region. but i cant seem to find anything on my star chart that indicates a nebula there.
At first i thought it was the final processing which might have made the weird ring appear.. or that there's some unknown pesky stuff stuck to my lens. so i dug out all the raw unprocessed photos which has the nebula in different positions of the frame, with different ISO settings and different Exposure time and the ring is still there.. attached below are raw photos from the modified 10D with no post processing other den conversion form raw to 8 bit, and levels stretched to highlight the "nebulosity" anyone else who had taken M42 in that region which included that star. could verify if its there too? or anyone could help give a positive ID to that??

Did it appear over 2 consecutive days?
Could be a lesser known comet...

Ok, Mr Zongye, mystery solved hehe.

Looking at Mr Gendler's deep pic, your mystery object is the brightest part of a small patch of nebula at the rightmost end.

Beware of many patches like that in the region. One such patch is the bluish patch just below the horsehead.
