CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Jupiter and it's Moons on 30 Aug 2009 - NG attempt

Post by weixing »

Hi,
It had been a long time since the last time I took a image of Jupiter, so I decided to try to took one at the end of the observation session on last Saturday night.

First try to stack my 2x and 1.6x barlow, but had problem to get a good focus due to the play of my focuser. Try only using the 2x barlow, but still can't get a good focus and time was running out (want to see the 2nd half of M vs A  ).... so just whack and took 30 images...

The result was just as expected... no good :(

Below is the image:
Jupiter and 3 of it's Moons (Left to right: Europa, Io and Ganymede)
Image

Shooting info
Telescope: Vixen R200SS 800mm F4.0 + 2x Barlow + MPCC = ~1600mm F8.0
Camera: Canon 450D
Image: 30 images x 1/80s exposure @ ISO200

Moral of the story: don't rush, be patient, take your time to focus as accurately as possible and take a lots of images.

Will try again next time and hopefully will get a better result.

Have a nice day.

Its a pretty good effort Mr Yang!
Remember the moons will "disappear" on 2 Sep if you intend to try then!

I can make the moons disappear... it's called Photoshop! Heh...

By the way, I was also attempting to image on Saturday night - seeing the sky was quite clear. My imaging setup was in hibernation for 1.5 years and I had to brush away the dust accumulating on my OTA! My battery also died but thanks to Joo Beng, I manage to have a smaller loan set in the field. The wire to my Sphinx mount also frayed - I may have to get a new one online soon. The mount feels sticky - it needs re-greasing. But amazingly, the rest of the electronic components still work, including the ToUcam!

Anyway, my skills a bit rusty, so I only managed to get this pic of Jupiter (I also imaged the moon but that was just for warming up before trying for Jupiter):

Powermate 5x
ToUcam

Will try harder next time!
