Jupiter on 31st August 2009

Post by Canopus Lim »

Anyone saw Jupiter at about 10pm to 12am yesterday (31/08/09)?

I can only say that it is probably one of the best or best Jupiter I have seen this year!

The seeing conditions was very good, as noted by the high clouds, high humidity and little wind.

Activities on Jupiter are:
1. GRS with orange and brown tones
2. Io transiting across Jupiter
3. Io's shadow on Jupiter
4. Very tiny white ovals following suit after GRS. About 4 of them.
5. Two large and blue festoons (length longer than length of GRS)
6. Two large and dark brown barges
7. Equatorial band filled with details
8. NEB with rather 'wavy' and sharp details
9. Thin North temperate belt
10. A long and diagonal belt just south of the GRS and joining towards the South temperate belt

Scope used was 12.5" at 320x giving a rock steady and sharp image of Jupiter. Not to mention it was 'feature galore'. :)

It was really cool with the sharp shadow transit, Io disc was bright and clearly discerned in front of Jupiter. The festoons were fantastic. I never seen so large ones! The barges were also large and dark brown. The white ovals that follow after the GRS were so small (almost star like). Good that the telescope has such resolving capability that it can be resolved.

Pretty cool considering the big rain that is pouring in Singapore since last week.

Yes...saw it with my mewlon 210...
Could see nicely that there was a occulation by one of its moon (Io) ... casting a nice shadow on its disk :)
...the seeing was so good that i was able to put a 3mm radian on the mewlon achieving a magnification of 826 x while seeing faint festoons on it surface ( althought it was not that sharp ) ! when i pop in the 7mm t6 nagler...it was jaw dropping...with details
