Orionids 2009

Post by fizzy123 »

Hi all, I am thinking of having a meteor shower obs for Orionids at the east side of SG (etc. ECP, Ubin), either on 16 or 17 October. The peak is at 21 but it is a weekday, so 16/17 is the best. Any clubs, grps or orgs planning to have obs for this celestial event? This year should be good as it coincide with the new moon.

Active: October 2-November 7
Maximum: October 21 (λo = 208°)
ZHR = 30
Radiant: α = 095° δ = +16°
Radiant drift: see Table 6
v∞ = 66 km/s; r = 2.4
TFC: α = 100° δ = +39° and α = 075° δ = +24° (β > 40° N)
\in or α = 080° δ = +01° and α = 117° δ = +01° (β < 40° N)

So eMinity u ok with 16/10 only or u might consider 17/10? Have you been to the ECP grass patch at C4/D1 area? It seems some obs session have been going on there awhile ago, was wondering if it is dark enough for meteors?

Yes, it's quite dark for meteors there.
But nowadays seems cloudy and hazy.

The radiant for Orionids is near the celestial equator, so when it culminates, the radiant is near the zenith, hence meteors will be visible over both the North & South hemisphere in the early morning. At ECP, the northern sky is affected by light-pollution, though the southern sky is slightly darker. The best chance to observe meteors is to head for a dark site away from the bright lights of any major city. Some of us will be driving to Sedili on 17 Oct 09 to observe, and also see if we catch some Orionids.

Due to my new work commitments, I doubt I can make it next friday for the ECP obs. However, I saw on this astronomy.SG that on the 2 weeks from now, marine parade astro is organizing an Orionids session at changi beaches on 24/10. I maybe joining them for this obs session. Changi beach gives good access to views in the northern skies.

Hi folks:

I too was watching to see whether there is any detectable Orionids over the last few days.. if the weather stay decent i believe you could detect them visually.

After a few days 'kosong' starts finally a handful was detected Oct 19 monday am.

I have added the timestamp for the orionids so you can guess the higher the radiant the more you care going to see.

http://nightevents.blogspot.com/2009/10 ... r-sky.html

Sirius and Canopus were in the composite to give you an estimation of path length, brightness and approximate location. The video had a FOV of 89 degree.

Happy meteor hunting.
