Hi, i'm looking for info on airline carry-on limits for flights departing from changi airport. i'm thinking of carrying my c8 ota (51x26x26 cm) on board. need to find a secondary scope if this is not allowed, anyone with experience transporting 5" sct/mak or 85mm refractor on airplanes?
thanks,
arief
ps: i've transported an etx90 before without problem, i just told the security it's a telephoto lens.
Airline Carry-on Rules
Hi ariefm71,
I have carried a 5.5" telescope onboard a trip from America back to Singapore. Not a problem. As long as it is not too bulky and weighs not more than 7-8kg. I have also brought a 2.4" refractor onboard, as well a 3-incher to NZ and Australia. I don't think a 5"SCT or 85mm refractor is a problem unless the refractor is f10 or more (long tube). Nevertheless during our solar eclipse expedition to Australia, some of us transported a 8" Nexstar via check-in luggage on SIA. Collimation fine after the trip.
Neveretheless, if you ever choose the option of check-in for your optical tubes, DO NOT discount on good packaging for them. The above are my personal experiences. Good luck!

Hi rcj, thanks for the info. I'll be going for a one week vacation to bogor, indonesia this month. I'll carry-on the C8 ota on a duffel bag (samsonite 225 airstop) and check-in the fork mount and tripod (will put a lot of paddings). Btw, did you ever have any issues with the customs? need to declare, etc?
