how's the observing at Semakau Island?

Alright, this is for sharing of your observation experience. Or, if you are arranging gatherings, star-gazing expeditions or just want some company to go observing together, you can shout it out here.

how's the observing at Semakau Island?

Post by orly_andico »

was reading this article which claimed Milky Way is visible from the ground there.

I understand this is the "landfill island" but is it publicly accessible? or only thru the accredited agencies?

Tasos does organise overnight trips there.
BTW, you can see the milkyway on clear nights in the darker areas in Tuas as well as on Ubin. Ubin would be more accessible for you too.
But the key word is "clear skies"! [smilie=crying3.gif]

I joined a TASOS organized trip to Semakau last year and was able to see the Milky Way, even though a cargo ship anchored near the shore was lit up like a Christmas tree. It's definitely worth the trip there - the southern skies there are among the darkest in Singapore. Do register as a TASOS member.

AGastro and MPastro maybe a gd choice if the hefty membership price for TASOS is not your cup of tea. Membership is freefor the clubs. If I am not wrong, AGastro did organise a star-gazing trip to that island for a reasonable fee. Heard the skies there are folds better than here, except for the ships in the straits of SG, makes it slightly brighter.

As for the milky way, there are places that are definitely dark enough to see it, my experience was at an area deep within LCK.
