Ha, Mersing? There are no train tracks to Mersing, or anywhere else in eastern Johor. And the proposed rapid transit system would not go anywhere near Mersing.
Actually, as a passenger, I much prefer the current set-up whereby passengers board in the city centre at Tanjong Pagar. With this relocation to Woodlands, passengers would have to travel all the way to Woodlands to board the train. I think most major cities have their main train station in the city centre, e.g. London, Tokyo, Paris, etc, and this is a step-back for Singapore in terms of passenger convenience.
Just earlier this month, I took the train from Tanjong Pagar to Kluang on my way to Kahang. It was quite a breeze: you clear Malaysian immigration and customs before boarding the train. Then when it arrives in Woodlands, you get off to clear the Singapore formalities. I know conceptually its unsound but its easier for passengers. Then on the return to Singapore, you clear Malaysian customs on board the train in Johor Bahru as the officials would board the train. At Woodlands, you get off the train to clear Singapore customs. There!
And I really enjoyed the very fast train run from Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar: the train zipped past everything in only 22 mins; must be one of the fastest cross country runs in the world.
I think there is something to be missed in having a main train line in Singapore and this move is regrettable. All in the name of using more land and selling it.
