Remote Kite Flying at Night (STOMP video)

Post by Gary »

Just when you thought Singapore skies are not polluted enough!

http://www.razor.tv/site/servlet/segmen ... 50814.html

Most LOL moment is the dialogue between the reporter and kite boss.

Boss: "Another one is the professional move which he can do is the inverted move"

Scene of kite flying inverted.

Reporter: "Which means????"

Boss: "Flying inverted".

ROFL WHAHHAHAHAHAH :)

Surprisingly the reporter didn't ask what is a stall turn. :P

I have seen one of the performances in action and even attended a workshop on remote kites. It is indeed a great way to pass time when the sky is cloudy, but the kites are not cheap, one will easily cost 500SGD.

Only for the filty rich.and the good question to ask is what you can learn from it?Keep on buying stuff like motors, batteries, remote control gadgets etc but just to waste your own time--crazy;whereas in astronomy as a hobby, you learn about physics, mechanics ,and our position in the universe;not to mention that you will appreciate why ancient civilization always worship the sun if you do solar obs and link it to the weather etc. With $500 you can get a decent scope already.

I think so. The correct term is aerokite. He kind of goes around and teach ppl how to fly or make those. He also sell the kites.

@superior: 500 dollars not enough for a decent scope... need at least 1k for apo... unless you get it from singastro

$500 is just for the kite alone.

The Transmitter / Receiver can very easily cost another $500 - $800.

My R/C friend (planes and helis) told me not to go into this hobby when I expressed interest several years ago. Transmitters can cost 2-3k even but that's overseas league. LOL! If you are into turbines the fuel costs are pretty crazy comparatively if you fly regularly. Issue is the laws are tough here, airspace limited (woodlands ave 12 pretty close to SBAB), so large turbine jets very very limited flying space. Same as astronomy, not easy to even start to Ob at a moment's notice.

Here's a C17.

Here's a fast one

Fastest ones they can do speeds that rival NDP flypast.
If it hits you, you end up worse than getting hit with a 20mm round.

Hi,All
With that kind of price for remote control;fuel;model aircraft;why not make amateur astronomy your hobby?Start with a Borg 125mm apo--4 kg only!;a C8 or better still C11 on manual mount and perhaps coupled with a 20x100 bino and some naglers. That Borg 125(obing sun also possible with such light scope) will make obs session a joy with say a porta. One can also go into astrophotography any time and there are tons of knowledge awaiting oneself. So make the correct choice and join us.Thanks.

There is actually not much point comparing one hobby better than the other and thus better to spend money on one over the other. Hobby is a very subjective thing. As long one person really enjoy his/her chosen hobby, whatever amount spent will be worth it from their point of view. No point convincing them to switch to another hobby which they may have abosolutely no interest in. Don't believe? Try convincing ladies who are into the hobby of buying new shoes and bags. LOL. :)

Actually its not that pricey anymore.
You can get a good basic transmitter and pre-assembled plane with LiPo battery, charger all set up for under US$300. (I think really entry level stuff for under 150 can be had, brand new of course) You do need someone who knows these things to make sure all the parts work together though.
After the initial beginner's crashes, you can fly a plane for a really long time and just enjoy its graceful movements, if you're not into hard-core mods and improvements. Yes, you can spend thousands of dollars to get more speed, finer controls etc, but just like any other hobby gets expensive when you really go deep. (22" telescope with permanent stand, custom observatory roof, tracking motors etc etc)
Check out this website www.hobbycity.com for a cheap way to enter RC flying.
Warning: Bad flying days are also usually cloudy days..... but flying tends to be done while the sun is still in the sky :)
