Visual back adapter screw positioning

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Visual back adapter screw positioning

Post by Gary »

One of the screws in the visual back adapter of my mak is very close to the focusing knob. Is this normal?

I have seen photos of other similar Maks and that screw is on the other side and not obstructing the focusing knob.

Other than drilling a hole on the other side and transfer the screw over, what are my options?

Hi,
The visual back can be loosen and you can turn the eyepiece holder, so that the screws is on the other side.

Have a nice day.

Yeah,,,you should be able to unscrew the visual back at the collar which allows the visual back main tube to spin! Then when you re-tighten ensure the screws are on the opposite side!

It's too tight. Nothing moves. Lubricant gone? Will let others give it a try next time.

Yah Hose clamp....haha!

Gary that should come off at the collar. It's probably stuck from never moving and weight/flex overtime, plus dryness, dampness, etc etc! Metal does that to us! Clamping will damage/scratch the texture on the collar. In fact try gripping the Tube(not by the locking screws) and turn that with some force! It should move and probably at the same time loosen the collar from the scopes threads!

The threads used for scopes aren't meant to be overtightened. Finger pressure is enough and metal to metal friction does the rest for you. Same goes with EP, crayfords, etc. It's when you overtighten something, u grove or create a dent into the metal which then causes you to tighten more and make deeper groves which need more tightening as you loose surface! The thread designs on scope accessories are such that overtightening they will lock up due to the sharpness of the threads itself, plus the thin and slimness. Aluminum (or Aluminium) will dent and threads with burs or dents lock up damaging themselves when unscrewed!

Or like my past C130 the scope back is plastic and the collar was metal!!..duh! Any meshing and it's like locking itself in!!

You could, turn scope lens up, spray some WD40 into a cup (plastic pls and don't put your face near!) get a cotton bud, wet it with the WD40 and run it in between the collar and scope seam. Let gravity pull the WD40 in. Wait awhile, dry cloth grip and turn with an "ARRRGH". Lens up so any access oil drips down away from your optics! Or bring on Friday and I ARRGH!!!

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I still have some WD40. Will give it a try during cloudy nights. :)
