Telescope base polish

Post by fizzy123 »

I am looking for polish that can be used to polish the base of the telescope of those porta-ball type scope, does anyone here have any suggestions? I heard of people using WD-40 car-polish for this purpose, but will piano polish do the same trick?

Btw, the scope I got is an Edmund Scientific Astroscan 2001

I've read some use normal Car wax polish. Coats well! I used it to coat my GSO focuser tube. Piano Polish won't leave a layer of protective wax unlike car polishes do. It's more for wood finishes...which need to be thinner and lighter.

Any idea how much does a small bottle of car polish together with the polishing mitten cost? Where can I buy a cheap bottle in Tampines? I don't drive, so I am not sure about this.

You could try the DIY shop at Century Square basement near the NTUC mart (not sure if they carry), otherwise head to nearest Petrol Station...they sure have some. Won't cost much....just that those polish wax with special coatings, water resistant, conditioner, etc etc will jack the price up! The normal white wax is ok...no need anything special! White wax is colorless when polished! You can pick up the yellow shammy cloth while there. You have a choice between the bottle liquid version or the can wax version. Liquid less mess as you apply and polish off,...dry wax, apply, let dry then polish off.

Don't think you will spend more than $20 on a small can of wax and cloth.

Do you think the polish can smoothen out the focuser of the galileo scope?

Hi Chris,

Dunno but worth a try...since the GSO crayford improvement was to clean out the china grease and polish the draw tube with normal car wax, then I don't see why it won't. Besides, car wax leaves a thin smooth silky film for some time. When it starts to stick, just polish again.

Wanted to post the link to the website that showed the GSO improvement but was greeted with a 'Member exceeded bandwidth'..haha!
