Post by fizzy123 »

Does any body know any good dark sites in the east? My usual observation site at Bedok reservoir is getting unusable with lights illuminating new roads and park facilities. How is Tampines Mountain bike trail? Do u need a permit, iz safe? How dark is it? wat limiting Mag.

Hi,
The below are some of the observation site that I know in Tampines:
1) My usual observation site. The grass field beside Tampines Stadium Car Park. Very convenient and Safe. North and East is quite free of obstruction, but South is partially block (can see southern cross) and West is block. Light pollution is quite serious.

2) The grass field opposite the Mosque/Tampines Swimming Complex. Very convenient and should be quite safe (observe in group is recommended), but will only suitable if the grass is cut. North and East is free of obstruction, but South is partially block and West is block. Light pollution is lower than site (1).

3) Heavy Vehicle Park at Tampines Ave 9 and opposite Blk 741 (I think so). Recommended by Chris Yeo. Quite convenient... got a bus stop at the entrance, but I don't think is safe for individual observation. Never been there at night. Got a gate at the entrance... wonder will it close at night?? Quite free of obstruction and light pollution should be quite low.

4) Tampines Mountain Bike Trail. Not convenient and offically close at 19:30. I don't think it is safe for individual observation. Never been there at night. Got a gate to block car at the entrance, but wonder will it lock at night?? Quite free of obstruction and light pollution should be quite low.

Have a nice day.

Hi all,
I have been with Weixing on a few occasions at the grass field beside Tampines Stadium Car Park. The area is quit bright but apart from the HDB flats on the West, the site gives a relatively wide view of the night sky.
Not for hunting faint objects (where in Singapore can do that??? ) but most objects should be visible on a good cloudless night.

As for the mountain bike trail, Wira and I tried it last year. Its supposed to be off limits after dark but we did go there anyway. Good points are a relatively dark area and a pavillion to seek shelter in case of rain.
Disadvantage is we noticed alot of of Bangladeshi workers walking around (not sure for what). The place is also full of mosquitoes and quite rocky due to the gravel path. If you deploy at the sandy car park, headlights from the cars at the junction would be a problem.
