Haha, ancient history!

That was the first iteration of the dob... and I was much smaller around the tummy..

and I was already suffering from my poorly-engineered creations back then...

here's another one (see the scope is different, this was the 2nd iteration)

Gary, you should try the "paper setting circles," it's almost as good as GoTo! just level the scope base, align the 0-degrees on the azimuth scale with compass north, and you're good to go. Read off the Alt and Az from your planetarium software, push the Dob so that it matches the Alt and Az. Works pretty well with a fast scope because of the large FOV.

or alternatively (not so accurate but worth a try) just put your Android phone on the upper cage. There is software out there which prints out the tilt and compass heading.
