As usual, a bunch of retarded Singaporeans getting conned at SLS. The difference between citizens and netizens? Netizens do their research online and survey market prices and best location to buy before heading out of the door. Citizen goes to SLS thinking it's the all-in-one place for cheap bargains and buys camera lenses there, when they can go to more reputable places like MS Color, Cathay Photo etc.

The result? Citizens get conned and post on STOMP, forums etc... for netizens to LAUGH AT! xD

What about those not net savvy, older folks and general public ?
Are they all Retarded ?
Why specifically Singaporeans ?

And what if they got better service and a lower price than those 'Netizens' ?
What should be call them then ?

Hi,All
Thats the difference between organized and unorganized. In the western world like in New Zealand there is the FAIR TRADING ACT and TOWN COUNCIL where consumer who had been con can seek advise and the authority can and will take actions against errant bussiness;eg counterfeit camera;counterfeit electronic products;especially when their shop is in reputible shopping centre.Singapore called itself FIRST WORLD--an undefined term internationally--and lacks such organized body and consumer are always left with a situation where its uneconomical (single person against a organization with huge financial power)to take action on such cheat. Thus cheating prevail.

Then they should just ask their younger children who are more net savvy to check out products and do research. The problem with Singaporeans is that a majority of them are damn kiasu and cheapo. They think that SLS is a bargain place, and everything there is cheap and good. But it's only true for IT products, where you have price lists to check. Buying lenses? It's just ridiculous, when they should be going to reputable places like Cathay Photo, MS Color and John 3:16.

Also, there's so many cheat cases with SLS shop owners recently reported on newspaper and even if these people are not net savvy, they should at least read TRADITIONAL media and be warned.

Better or lower prices is fine, as long as don't get cheated. And I agree with superiorstream that we should have a FAIR TRADING ACT or something to protect consumers. It's extremely ridiculous that people can do nothing when they are conned of their money, especially in a shop. If only the rally speech was not all about the economy and growth, but rather about protecting our citizens as well. Sigh, yeah "world class indeed" when YOG was a flop.

Hi,All
Fair Trading is important and will allow us to shop in confident. In the high tech world a product that loses its usefulness is just a piece of rubbish and hence quality and reliability is v.important.Think--a memory card or a computer that cost hundred is just a piece of useless plastic after it malfunction.Just imagine--if all the shop that sell gold has no quality assurance and some start selling fake gold while other anyhow quote prices will you or tourist buy?You see, many telescope/telescope parts are manufactured in China or Taiwan, but you prefer to buy from the US because quality is assured.I even heard that Takahashi do polish their lens in China because China has the required glass;but exported to Japan for quality control assembled;then sell as made in Japan and yes because they perform;so we trust them. Thus trust and quality is v.important and if these idiots/cheat are not stop;then Singapore will lose out to other tourist destination--bad for both you and me.Thanks.

Another one bites the dust!

If only they would do some research, understand the item, and just plain ask friends and family about something! Biggest prob I see is the lack of ability to communicate!! With this comes the lack of knowing what to ask and how to ask for it. Just go up to a counter and say 'Good morning' with a nice smile! Chances are he/she would stare at you in total blankness!!
With the current trend of SMS for everything, this failure of communication takes another step towards more failure and leads to misunderstandings all over.
Yeah alot think that SLS is a bargain haunt! Well not anymore really! It actually is wiser to pay more for something from HP or DELL for the sake of security and support. Consumers here always want the easy way out, lots of support, FREE gifts, extras, extras and CHEAP! Yeah sure...doesnt work that way.
Then when they get something crappy, they spend all that time complaining, trying to win and avoid the simple reason of lack of understanding of something. I'm just as surprised when many Singaporeans don't even know most of the rules that govern the country when its available everywhere and even the net. Spend hours on facebook, SMS and can't surf for info?? Sheesh.

As I told a friend once " When do you change the batteries in your home torchlight?" He replied " I never, but do so when I realize I need to use it during a blackout and it doesn't work!" " So why bother then if it ceases to be a torchlight?" I responded! Just a simple example of procrastination when we really have the time to do alot!

Like,...a Fire Extinguisher for the home is a worthy investment in terms of keeping your home and family safe...right? It cost a mere $50 or less for a reliable unit that can be affixed to a wall at home. Many don't have one or don't see the value in having one! But can pay hundreds for their Hire purchase of electronics and the 10% usage of their IPhone per month!...lol! That versus something that you pay once and protects you for a lifetime!!

Just my 2c....with a pinch of salt everyone. I don't hate anyone or anything, but find it disappointing when just a little time spent something can make the difference in forever. So many cases of SLS and their prices yet many don't get it! They still risk it and then argue or try to win when they know they can't. Sad really!
My wife never complained about how much time, effort & money I spent on my Astronomy hobby!................suddenly I met her!!!

In China and many other countries this always happens what...
Some people get conned, some don't. Even as a tourist, my wife can bargain until the face turned green, the boss like quarrel with us....don't buy lah don't buy lah.... then we turned....and they will come along and said.... ok bro/sis, going to close shop, give you at your price.
Happened so many times. 30% of the original price, 15% of the original price, all got. And there are actually SGreans in the group who paid > 50% of the price. They think nearly 50% of the original price = good deal. :)

So no problem..... Having a degree doesn't mean street smart. Having only a ITE/secondary sch cert doesn't mean cannot drive a BMW earned with his own means. :) (so many of them in my reservist, anyway MR loh)
My Indo in laws actually don't even have a cert. :) But speak to a tow-kay, is very different from speaking to a director in the corporate world. Different league bros....
