In the US, quite a number of crimes committed with firearms are those that involved illegal weapons, such as weapons bought on the black market, stolen weapons or even possession of an illegal class of weapons (e.g. automatic rifles). But I still believe it is ok to visit the States as long as you do not visit the slums, hang around alone at night, very much like the precaution anyone should take in a typical city.

On the issue of legalizing firearms, I am surprised that the Swiss managed this sensitive issue well for many yrs. I have heard that their conscripts are are given a working rifle each, together with a magazine of 30 rds; and are expected to keep it at home. But surprisingly, you seldom hear of any crimes committed with their service rifles. The same can be said about Israeli armed forces, as it is not foreign to see their conscripts carry their rifles in public during mobilisation. I doubt even SGreans have this level of maturity with regards to carrying arms

here's a scary thought. about 25% of Philippine car-owners are also gun owners. So getting into an argument over a fender-bender is potentially life-threatening.

One of the things I don't miss about Manila (although I do miss driving).

One thing I must clarify is that I am not talking about those slump and darkcorners of town;but the quiet American countryside where people there had lived for generations;they know one another and are really nice people.Anyway if you are travelling alone across desert etc from east US to say west US;you better buy a gun for either self defense against... or perhaps against wild dogs/wolf/snakes or what not!,thus in spite of all the complaint;the right to possess a gun still prevail in that country.
