Orion's belt and sword

Last 8-9 November when I was in Manila, I had some trouble with my DSI so while fixing it (drivers...) I took 14, 30-second images with my Pentax K20D. It was in debug mode to disable the pesky dark-frame subtraction.

So a total of 7 minutes of images of the entire Orion complex, using a 50mm SMC Pentax-M lens which I bought for $20. It was stopped down to f/4.

I just processed the images now because DSS takes forever on DSLR images, which are quite large. To my great surprise, I can see NGC1977 (Running Man) and NGC2124 (Flame Nebula) in this image..

This was with the camera on the Vixen Polaris with an eyeball polar alignment.

I have to point out that the 50mm lens, even stopped down to f/4 has pretty severe coma once you get 1/3rd out from the center. Luckily, this Orion belt and sword crop was in the center of the image. The 6-pointed stars are due to the camera's iris diaphragm.

download the file disable_dfs.zip

unzip that file, put everything in the file on the root directory of your SD card.

put the SD card in the camera, but do NOT close the SD card door. When you turn on the camera, it will prompt if you want to enter debug mode. Select <EN> and then press OK.

You will be in debug mode and the DFS won't be enabled anymore.

To turn off debug mode, turn off the camera, open the SD card door, turn it on, then select <DIS> for debug mode and press OK. Then turn off the camera, close the card door, and you're back in regular mode.

You don't want debug mode on all the time because it leaves the LCD powered all the time which will drain your battery fast.

I dun know y even i chose debug mode with k-x i cannot disable_dfs..

i can choose debug mode.. then i <DIS> for debug mode and press OK... can go debug mode.. but have a file together called sysparam .. inside got [DISABLENR] 1@ .. still cannot disable NR.. =(

It turns out that the K-x needs a MODSET.492 file, this is not present in the disable_dfs.zip

So copy one of the existing MODSET.xxx files and rename it to MODSET.492

Turn on the camera while pressing Av button, this should bring up the debug menu.

NOTE: do not disable debug mode!!!! debug mode MUST BE ON in order for disable NR to be functional!!!

Just disable the debug mode after you're done with your long exposures..
