M46 & NGC 2438

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

M46 & NGC 2438

Post by timatworksg »

Another attempt at imaging. Monday night was clear and took the opportunity to further fine tune my AP journey.
This time it's M46(NGC2437) an open cluster in Puppis and a Planetary Nebula (NGC 2438) which isn't related to the cluster as it does not share the cluster's radial velocity.

Had only an hour to shoot as I spent the hour before this figuring out why PHD wasn't correcting my DEC! Checked all wires, power, motors, balance, re-installed software...almost tore my eyes out! Then realized that when I re-installed EQMOD in early JAN, I did not set the EQMOD GuideRate! After a simple click, I had full Autoguiding again. *Hiyah! Daddy always told me to read the manual before touching things!

Anyway, hope you all like it. Not satisfied with the processing so gonna re-process when I have the time.

- 10x30s/10x60s subs. Combined & processed in Maxim and PS CS3

Hi,
Nice... This was a very fine open cluster... like sand if view on a dark sky.

Happy imaging and have a nice day.

Hi shirox,

well have yet to image through it but it has served it's purpose. Guide stars aplenty!! Have not really given it a chance with a viewing session till I have the time. But yeah, if I head down Friday I will lug it along.
Pricey for a finderscope but makes a nice small wide field shooter.

Thanks weixing. Yes it is like sand. Hard to see even with averted vision...but it's there. Helps train the eye's for spotting stuff like this!
