CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!
Lacking of stuff to shoot lately from the south (since that's where the balcony is facing), thought I will try to capture the Vela Supernova Remnant (well part of it) and see what the CCD can pull out (if any!). The Vela SNR is extremely faint (much fainter than the Veil in Cygnus), and was formed when the supernova exploded about 11,000 years ago. The Vela SNR is part of the greater Gum Nebula, but the SNR itself would probably take a couple of frames to piece a mosaic that encompasses it. Being extremely faint at the same time, finding it involved star-hopping from reference fields, even then, none of the filaments was visible in the CCD preview window. Composing it took sometime in order to frame it where there were more filaments to be expected in the FOV. It was also a challenge extracting out the intricate filaments in the structure. Total exposure time in HA is 100min (though it should really be in the order of 300min and beyond), taken from the balcony the night before with the 5" refractor.
Wonderful job Remus! Well worth the try! And well done on the capture!
Once again it shows how our SG skies can still capture magazine quality images of the night skies!! This shows it is very possible....and trying is the best part of anything!
My wife never complained about how much time, effort & money I spent on my Astronomy hobby!................suddenly I met her!!!
thanks everyone for your comments...have tried taking OIII component for this object last night. Can't get enough of data for this faint bugger. Hopefully can grab SII side of things next week...
Possible...but a thin layer of Haze exist! Still some rain but the sky behind it is clear...just the haze. You can feel the humidity and heat rising each day....signal of Hot days to come.....again!
