CGEM sticky RA axis

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

CGEM sticky RA axis

Post by orly_andico »

So I get my CGEM.. and the RA axis is sticky, making it difficult to balance. I'm also concerned this is what caused the motor controller to burn out (it was returned to Celestron for servicing).

Can anyone try the trick in my video? how many times does the counterweight pendulum swing? in my case it's only 1 and 1/2 swings.

According to Ed Thomas, this is "normal" for CGEM's out of the factory. Hence it needs a hypertune. It does work well (enough) for visual but long-term I don't want to stress the RA motor so will have to disassemble, regrease, and polish the RA axis.

Sigh. This is what one gets when one doesn't have a Tak budget. [smilie=beaten.gif]

Well, on the other hand, the difference between the CGEM and a Tak budget should buy you at least few weeks of your time :)
