Amateur attempt at Antares 29 Apr 11

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Amateur attempt at Antares 29 Apr 11

Post by Sivakis »

Still experimenting to see how far a basic DSLR can go in cloudy and bright Singapore.

Saw Antares high up last night and experimented to see what else my 500D dslr can do besides shoot Jupiter.....

I was inspired to see weixing's earlier post on shooting the M4 cluster and was pleasantly surprised that, with a 55-250 lens, I could work out the hints of M4.

Forgive me, not the best of pics and simply amateurish compared to you guys- just wanted to share my excitement :D

@Sivakis: Thanks for sharing! Nice photo showing what a DSLR can do in Singapore skies. It helps me to further burn into my memory the relative positioning of M4 with respect to these 2 bright stars. Will help me to increase the probability of finding it directly via a zero-power finder without star-hopping.

Thanks Gary :)

Just borrowed my brothers telescope. It's an Optisan Star 70076. Can hardly find any information about it online but I'm gonna see what I can shoot with it, nonetheless :)

@Sivakis: Your brother's telescope is most probably this one:

F70076

Optisan Star 70076

70076 = 700 (telescope focal length in mm) 76 (aperture of primary mirror in mm)

It is marketed under various brands but the "70076" is usually mentioned in the model name.

This telescope almost became my first telescope but the price seems too good to be true and the seller who owns a departmental store here have no knowledge about this product. So I did not commit.

Yup, that's the one. Can't find any user manual, so pretty much fixed it up based on logic. I've got some questions regarding it, which I'll be posting in the Equipment subforum.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

Did the shot stacking 10 shots at 1.5secs each. Anything more and I start to get star trails.... thinking of building my own barndoor tracker :P

And what's with all the cloudy nights these days!! :(

We are always on the ready for encouragement!
Cloudy nights?....lotsa new toys bought I guess...hehe.

Have a go at a barndoor tracker. I just made on and awaiting to test. Also working on a slimmer version prototype. If it works great! If not...it was fun trying.
